Eight easy day trips from Lahore by car, from Hiran Minar and Changa Manga to Kartarpur, Khewra and Kallar Kahar, with drive times, car choice and rental rates.
Lahore has enough to fill a week, but some of the best experiences in Punjab sit just outside the city: a Mughal hunting tower, a planted forest with a lake, a gurdwara of world importance, the ruins of an Indus Valley city and a mine carved out of pink salt. All of them can be reached and enjoyed in a single day by car.
This guide lists eight easy day trips from Lahore, with approximate distance, drive time, what to see and who each one suits. It also covers the best car for a one-day trip from Lahore, current rental rates and how to book a car with driver from 1 Call Cabs so nobody has to drive home tired.
Distances and times below are approximate, one way, from central Lahore. Traffic, roadworks and where you start in the city can change them.
Destination | Approx. distance | Drive each way | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
Hiran Minar, Sheikhupura | About 40 km | About 1 hour | Short family outing, Mughal history |
Kasur | About 55 km | 1 to 1.5 hours | Bulleh Shah's shrine and local sweets |
Changa Manga Forest | About 70 to 80 km | About 1.5 hours | Picnics, boating, children |
Kartarpur, Narowal | About 110 to 130 km | 2 to 2.5 hours | Gurdwara Darbar Sahib |
Harappa | About 195 to 200 km | 3 to 3.5 hours | Ancient history and museum |
Rohtas Fort | About 190 to 200 km | 3.5 to 4 hours | A huge UNESCO-listed fort |
Khewra Salt Mine | About 240 km | 3 to 3.5 hours | A unique underground experience |
Kallar Kahar and Katas Raj | About 250 to 260 km | 3 to 4 hours | Salt Range lake and temples |
Just north-west of Lahore near Sheikhupura, Hiran Minar is a tall Mughal minaret built by Emperor Jahangir in memory of his favourite antelope. It stands beside a large water tank with a pavilion in the middle, reached by a raised causeway. It is quiet, green and good for a walk and a picnic. Allow one to two hours on site. It is the easiest choice for a half day or for families with small children.
About an hour south of Lahore, Kasur is the resting place of the Sufi poet Bulleh Shah. His shrine is busy with visitors and qawwali, especially on Thursdays. Kasur is also known for its falooda and andrasay, so come hungry. Some visitors continue to the smaller Ganda Singh Wala border ceremony nearby; check locally that it is running and carry your CNIC.
Changa Manga, south-west of Lahore, is one of the largest planted forests in the region. The picnic area has a lake for boating, lawns, a children's play area and a small forest train, and the Punjab tourism department runs a resort on site. It is a classic family and school picnic spot. Go on a weekday if you can, as weekends get crowded.
The Gurdwara Darbar Sahib at Kartarpur in Narowal district marks the place where Guru Nanak spent his final years. It is one of the holiest sites in Sikhism and a large, peaceful complex worth seeing whatever your faith. The drive is about two hours or a little more via Muridke and Narowal or the Sialkot Motorway.
Pakistani visitors register at the entrance with their original CNIC and pay an entry fee. Foreign nationals should carry their passport and valid visa. Arrive in the morning, because entry for visitors closes in the afternoon, well before evening. Dress modestly and cover your head inside the gurdwara.
These trips need an early start, ideally on the road by 7 or 8 am, and make for a long day of 11 to 13 hours. They are where a car with driver really pays off.
Near Sahiwal, Harappa was one of the great cities of the Indus Valley civilisation. What you see today are brick mounds, old streets, wells and granaries, plus a small museum with pottery, seals and jewellery. It suits travellers with a real interest in history. The site has little shade, so the cooler months are best.
Near Dina in Jhelum district, Rohtas Fort was built by the Afghan ruler Sher Shah Suri and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its massive walls, bastions and gates, including the grand Sohail Gate, make it one of the most impressive forts in South Asia. The drive is on the GT Road through Gujranwala, Gujrat and Jhelum, so it can be slow in town traffic. Many travellers visit it on the way to or from Islamabad instead of as a pure day trip.
Khewra, in the Salt Range, is one of the oldest and largest salt mines in the world. Inside, the tunnels are lit to show off pink and red salt walls, with a small mosque and other models carved from salt. From Lahore you take the M-2 Motorway north and leave at the Lilla interchange, then drive through Pind Dadan Khan to the mine. Allow two to three hours on site.
Kallar Kahar sits right beside the M-2 in the Salt Range, with a lake, hillside gardens and views over the valley. Nearby, the Katas Raj temples near Choa Saidan Shah are an ancient Hindu temple complex built around a sacred pond. You can combine both with Khewra if you start very early, but it is a long day, and many families choose two of the three.
A one-day trip from Lahore to Islamabad is possible on the M-2, though it makes for a very long day; our Lahore to Islamabad by car guide has the details. Murree is better as an overnight trip, as explained in our Lahore to Murree road trip guide. If you would rather stay in the city, our Lahore city tour itinerary covers the Walled City, Badshahi Mosque, Lahore Fort and the Wagah ceremony.

For one-day trips, most customers rent a car with driver in Lahore. The driver knows the exits and interchanges, waits while you sightsee and brings everyone home safely after a long day. Self drive rentals have a minimum of 5 days under our current terms and conditions, so they suit visitors who plan several day trips during a longer stay. You can read more on our self drive rent a car in Lahore page.
Running allowance: our standard allowance is 150 km per day. Hiran Minar and Kasur usually fit within it and Changa Manga is close to the limit, while Kartarpur, Khewra, Kallar Kahar, Harappa and Rohtas go beyond it and are quoted as an outstation trip with extra charges agreed at booking.
Driver duty hours: up to 10 hours per day unless agreed otherwise. Mention a long day when you book so the timing is planned in.
Driver food and residence: the client provides the driver's meal during the trip. If you do not provide it, a charge of PKR 2,000 per day applies to cover the driver's food and residence.
Fuel, tolls and parking: these are client expenses unless your quote says otherwise.
Start early and aim to be heading home before dark.
Carry your CNIC, or passport and visa if you are a foreign visitor, for entry points and checks.
Keep cash for entry tickets, parking and food stalls.
Check opening times on the day, especially for Kartarpur, Khewra and museums.
Pack water, snacks and sun protection, as some sites have little shade.
Tell us where you want to go, how many people are travelling and your preferred start time, and we will suggest the right car and send a clear quote. Choose your vehicle on the book a car page, call or WhatsApp +92 303 0160840, or send your plan through our contact page.
Hiran Minar and Changa Manga are the easiest, at around an hour to an hour and a half each way with open space for children. For a bigger day out, Khewra Salt Mine is a family favourite.
About 240 km by road via the M-2 Motorway and the Lilla interchange, which usually takes three to three and a half hours each way without long stops.
Yes. It is about two to two and a half hours each way. Leave in the morning, as visitor entry closes in the afternoon, and carry your original CNIC or passport.
Daily rates start from PKR 5,500 for a Toyota Corolla GLI on our fleet page. Longer trips beyond the 150 km daily allowance carry outstation charges, and fuel, tolls and parking are paid by the client.
The client provides the driver's meal. If you prefer not to, a charge of PKR 2,000 per day applies instead.
