Driving from Lahore to Islamabad? Get the M-2 distance, travel time, toll tips and your rental options, from one way drops with driver to self drive.
Lahore to Islamabad is one of the busiest road routes in Pakistan. Business meetings, family visits in the twin cities, flights from Islamabad International Airport, university moves and weekend trips all send thousands of cars up the motorway every day. Driving is often the easiest way to make the trip: you leave from your own door, carry as much luggage as you need and arrive exactly where you want to be.
This guide covers the distance, the best route, realistic travel time, what to budget for beyond the car itself, and how to rent a car from Lahore to Islamabad with 1 Call Cabs, either as a one way drop with driver, a multi-day trip or a self drive rental.
Route | Approx. distance | Approx. driving time |
|---|---|---|
M-2 Motorway (Lahore-Islamabad Motorway) | About 375 km on the motorway, about 380-390 km door to door | About 4 to 4.5 hours without long stops |
GT Road (N-5) via Gujranwala, Gujrat, Jhelum and Rawalpindi | Shorter on paper | Usually 6 hours or more |
The motorway length is the officially listed 375 km. Door to door distance depends on where you start in Lahore and where you finish in Islamabad or Rawalpindi. Times are based on published route guides and normal traffic, so allow extra for meal stops, prayers, weekend rush and weather.
For most travellers the M-2 is the clear choice. It is a divided, controlled-access road with no traffic signals or town traffic, it is patrolled by the National Highways and Motorway Police, and it has service areas at regular intervals.
The M-2 starts at Thokar Niaz Baig on the south-western edge of Lahore, which is usually the natural entry from Johar Town, Wapda Town, Model Town and the Canal Road side. From other parts of the city the Ring Road can take you to the motorway, and from northern Lahore the Lahore Northern Bypass connects near Kala Shah Kaku. Check live traffic before you leave, because getting out of the city at rush hour can take longer than you expect.
The motorway has several service areas where you can refuel, eat, pray and rest. Bhera is roughly halfway and is the most popular stop for families. Kallar Kahar sits near the Salt Range, and Chakri is the last major stop before Islamabad. One proper break of 20 to 30 minutes keeps the driver fresh and the children happy.
Around Kallar Kahar, the motorway crosses the Salt Range, with climbs, descents and long curves. This is the only stretch where you really need to slow down, keep your distance and stay in your lane, especially with a fully loaded car.
Near the northern end, follow the signs for Islamabad, Rawalpindi or the airport depending on your destination. If you will need a car once you arrive, see our page on rent a car in Islamabad or rent a car in Rawalpindi.
The Grand Trunk Road (N-5) runs through Gujranwala, Gujrat, Jhelum and Rawalpindi. It is shorter in kilometres but passes through busy towns, markets and signals, so it usually takes longer. Choose it only if you want to stop along the way, for example to visit relatives in Gujranwala or Jhelum, or if part of the motorway is closed.
Early morning departures are the easiest. Leaving Lahore before the morning rush gets you out of the city quickly.
Friday evenings, long weekends and the days before Eid bring heavy traffic at both ends of the motorway.
Winter fog, mostly in December and January, can slow traffic or close sections of the M-2. Check Motorway Police updates before you set off and avoid night travel in dense fog.
Monsoon rain in July and August reduces visibility, so drive slower and keep extra distance.

The M-2 is a toll road. The toll depends on your vehicle class and on which entry and exit you use, and rates are revised from time to time, so check the current rate with the National Highway Authority or at the toll plaza before you travel. Make sure the car has a working M-Tag for the faster lanes.
Fuel cost depends on the car, how loaded it is and how you drive, so we do not quote a fixed figure here. Ask us for an estimate for the exact car you are renting. Under our terms and conditions, fuel, tolls, parking and traffic fines are client expenses during the rental unless your quote says otherwise, so always ask what is included.
If you only need to get to Islamabad, for a meeting, a flight or to drop family, our one way drop service is the simplest option. A driver picks you up from your home, hotel or office in Lahore and drops you at your exact address in Islamabad or Rawalpindi. You do not pay for a car to sit idle while you are away. One way drops are always with driver, and we confirm the fare and inclusions before dispatch.
If you are staying a few days and need a car in Islamabad too, book outstation car rental with a driver from Lahore. A few points to know:
Driver food and residence: on outstation trips the client provides the driver's meals and accommodation. If you do not provide them, a charge of PKR 2,000 per day applies.
Duty hours: the driver works up to 10 hours per day unless agreed otherwise.
Outstation charges: trips outside Lahore on daily bookings carry extra charges, agreed when you book.
Prefer to drive yourself? Our self drive rent a car in Lahore can be used for out of city trips if the route is agreed at booking. Remember that self drive has a 5 day minimum, a security cheque is required and the standard running limit is 150 km per day, with extra usage charged as agreed. A return trip to Islamabad is well above that daily limit, so tell us your plan upfront and we will include it in your quote.
These are the starting daily rental rates currently listed on our fleet page. One way drop fares, outstation charges and with-driver packages are quoted per trip, so share your plan for an exact price.
