Naran is a summer favourite for Lahore families, groups of friends and overseas Pakistanis home for the holidays. Cool air, the Kunhar River, Lake Saif ul Malook and Babusar Top make the Kaghan Valley one of the easiest mountain escapes from Punjab, and going by car lets you stop where you like and keep the same vehicle for every side trip.
This guide covers the distance from Lahore to Naran, the motorway route, realistic travel time, the best season, which car to choose and how to rent a car from Lahore to Naran with 1 Call Cabs, with a driver who knows the mountain roads.
Depending on where you start in Lahore and the exact route, the distance is usually quoted at roughly 620 to 680 km. Most of it is motorway; the last stretch is a mountain road through the Kaghan Valley.
Leg | Road | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
Lahore to Islamabad | M-2 Motorway | Fast, controlled-access motorway with service areas |
Islamabad to Mansehra | M-1 and the Hazara Motorway | Good motorway past Haripur and Abbottabad |
Mansehra to Naran | N-15 via Balakot, Kiwai, Paras and Kaghan | About 120 km of mountain road, usually 3.5 to 4 hours |
In total, plan for 10 to 14 hours door to door with meal and prayer stops. Summer weekends, Eid holidays, roadworks and weather on the valley section can add several hours, so treat any single figure as a guide rather than a promise.
The first part is the same drive covered in our Lahore to Islamabad by car guide. You join the M-2 at Thokar Niaz Baig or via the Ring Road and head north past the service areas at Bhera and Kallar Kahar.
Near Islamabad you take the M-1 towards Peshawar for a short distance and then turn onto the Hazara Motorway. It runs north past Haripur and Abbottabad towards Mansehra. Abbottabad is a natural lunch stop, and Mansehra is the last large town with a full range of shops before the valley.
After Mansehra the road drops to Balakot and follows the Kunhar River up through Kiwai, Paras and Kaghan town to Naran. This is where the trip slows down. The road is paved but narrow in places, with bends, village bazaars and holiday traffic. It is also the most beautiful part of the drive.
Experienced drivers often make it in one long day by leaving very early. For families, elderly parents and visitors just off a long flight, splitting the drive is more comfortable:
Night in Islamabad: easy hotels and food, then a fresh start up the Hazara Motorway.
Night in Abbottabad or Mansehra: leaves only the valley section for the next morning.
Night in Balakot: puts you close to Naran and lets you drive the mountain road in morning light.
Whatever you choose, avoid driving the valley road after dark. Bends, unlit stretches and the chance of rock falls make daylight the safer choice.
Naran is seasonal. The road to Naran is generally open from late spring, once the snow clears, until the first heavy snowfall in late autumn. Summer, roughly May to September, is peak season, with the most open attractions and the busiest roads. Babusar Top opens later in the summer and closes earlier than Naran itself, so do not plan a Babusar day in early spring or late autumn without checking first.
Autumn brings colourful scenery and fewer crowds, but cold nights and some hotel closures. In winter, snow usually blocks the road beyond the lower valley. Always check road conditions before leaving Lahore.
Lake Saif ul Malook: the valley's most famous lake, a short distance above Naran. The track up is rough, so most visitors take a local jeep from Naran rather than their own car.
Lulusar Lake: a large, calm lake on the road towards Babusar Top.
Babusar Top: the high pass at the top of the valley, open only in the summer months.
Shogran and Siri Paye: green meadows reached from Kiwai, often visited on the way up or down.
Kaghan town and the Kunhar River: riverside stops, trout restaurants and easy walks.
A comfortable plan is 4 to 5 days in total: a travel day up, one or two days for the lakes and Babusar, and a travel day back. Our Naran Kaghan tour from Lahore page has more ideas for planning the valley itself.
For most travellers, a car with an experienced driver is the easiest way to do the trip. You relax on the long motorway stretch, the driver handles the mountain road, and you do not have to worry about parking, directions or night driving. Our rent a car with driver service is available for northern trips, and the driver stays with you for the whole journey.
Self drive is possible if the route is agreed at booking. Keep in mind that self drive rentals have a minimum of 5 days and a running limit of 150 km per day, with extra kilometres charged as agreed. A Lahore to Naran round trip plus local driving will normally go beyond that limit, so share your full plan when you ask for a quote. Read our terms and conditions for the documents and security requirements.
Our outstation car rental service covers routes across Pakistan, so you can combine Naran with Islamabad or other stops on the way home.
These are the starting daily rates currently listed on our fleet page. Final quotes depend on the number of days, with driver or self drive, route and availability.

Driver food and residence: on a with-driver trip, the client provides the driver's meals and accommodation. If you do not provide them, a charge of PKR 2,000 per day applies.
Fuel, tolls and parking: these are client expenses unless your quote says otherwise, including motorway tolls in both directions.
Outstation charges: out of city trips on daily bookings carry extra charges, agreed at the time of booking.
Driver duty hours: up to 10 hours per day unless agreed otherwise, another reason to split the drive.
Jeep hire: local jeeps for Saif ul Malook and similar tracks are arranged and paid separately in Naran.
A well maintained sedan can reach Naran town on the paved road in peak season, and many families do it every summer. If you plan to go beyond Naran towards Lulusar and Babusar Top, travel early or late in the season, or carry a full load of passengers and luggage, a higher SUV is the more comfortable and confident choice. The Toyota Fortuner and Toyota Prado TX are popular for northern trips because of their ground clearance and space.
For families of six or seven on a tighter budget, the Honda BRV gives three rows of seats at a lower daily rate. For extended family trips, the Hiace Grand Cabin carries up to 13 people with room for bags.
Leave early. A pre-dawn start from Lahore gives you daylight for the valley road.
Check road status. Landslides after heavy rain and early or late season snow can close sections at short notice.
Book ahead in peak season. Cars and hotels go quickly around Eid and the summer school holidays.
Pack for cold evenings. Even in summer, Naran nights can be chilly, and Babusar is colder still.
If Naran feels too far for your dates, a shorter mountain break is our Lahore to Murree road trip, which can be done in a weekend.

The road distance is usually quoted at roughly 620 to 680 km, depending on your starting point and route. Most of it is on the M-2 and Hazara Motorway, followed by about 120 km of mountain road from Mansehra.
Plan for 10 to 14 hours door to door with stops. Peak season traffic, roadworks and weather on the valley road can add more time, which is why many families split the trip with a night in Islamabad, Abbottabad or Balakot.
Yes. 1 Call Cabs offers cars, SUVs, vans and coasters with driver for northern trips. The driver stays with you for the whole trip, and outstation charges are agreed at the time of booking.
The client provides the driver's meals and accommodation. If you prefer not to arrange them, a charge of PKR 2,000 per day applies instead.
In peak season, a sedan can usually reach Naran town on the paved road. For Babusar Top, early or late season travel or a full load of passengers, an SUV such as the Toyota Fortuner or Prado TX is the better choice.
The road is generally open from late spring until the first heavy snowfall in late autumn, with summer as peak season. Babusar Top opens later and closes earlier, so always check current conditions before you travel.
