"Which car should we take to the northern areas?" is one of the first questions families ask us when they plan a trip from Lahore to Naran, Hunza, Skardu or Swat. Overseas Pakistanis and foreign visitors ask it too, often expecting that every mountain trip needs a big 4x4. The honest answer is that it depends less on the badge and more on where your road ends, how many people are travelling and how much luggage you carry.
This guide explains which car is best for the northern areas of Pakistan, route by route, compares sedans, crossovers, SUVs and vans with real rates from our fleet, and shows when you should leave the car behind and take a local jeep.
Paved main roads in good weather: a well-maintained sedan can reach Murree, Naran, Swat up to Kalam, Hunza and Skardu.
Families with luggage, elderly parents or long days: an SUV or 7-seater is far more comfortable and has better ground clearance for broken patches.
Groups of eight or more: a van or coaster with a driver is usually the most comfortable and cost-effective option.
Jeep tracks such as Fairy Meadows, Deosai and Mahodand Lake: no rental car goes there. Hire a local jeep with its own driver.
The table below assumes a trip in the main tourist season, normal luggage and a driver who knows mountain roads. Winter and the monsoon change the picture, as explained further down.
Destination or road | Minimum sensible choice | Better choice | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
Murree and the Galyat | Sedan | Crossover | Short, paved hill roads; parking and traffic are the main issues |
Naran and the Kaghan valley | Sedan | Crossover or SUV | Paved to Naran once the road opens for the season |
Babusar Top | Crossover | SUV | High pass with steep climbs, open only in summer |
Swat to Kalam | Sedan in dry weather | SUV | Paved but broken in places above Bahrain |
Karakoram Highway to Hunza | Sedan | SUV | Paved highway, but very long days and occasional landslide debris |
Road to Skardu | Crossover | SUV | Gorge road along the Indus where rockfall is possible |
Fairy Meadows, Deosai, Mahodand Lake | Local jeep | Local jeep | Unpaved jeep tracks |
Read this as a floor, not a ceiling. A Prado is never wrong for Hunza, but you do not strictly need one. For route details, see our guides on Lahore to Naran by car and Lahore to Hunza by car.
All rates below are the starting daily rates currently listed on our fleet page. Your final quote depends on the dates, route, number of days and availability.
The Toyota Corolla GLI (from PKR 5,500/day), Toyota Yaris and Honda City (each from PKR 6,000/day), Toyota Corolla Altis Grande 1.8 and Honda Civic X (each from PKR 8,000/day) all handle paved mountain roads well in good weather. Our fleet page lists them with space for 2 large bags, so they suit two to three adults travelling light. The limits are boot space, low ground clearance on broken stretches and comfort for rear passengers over a 10-hour day. Browse all sedan cars for rent.
The Honda BRV (7 seats, from PKR 7,000/day) is the value choice for a family of five or six. For more comfort and a higher driving position, the Hyundai Tucson (from PKR 10,000/day), Kia Sportage (from PKR 11,000/day) and MG HS (from PKR 12,000/day) are listed with space for 3 large bags. The Oshan X7 offers 7 seats from PKR 15,000/day. These cars are ideal for Naran, Swat and Murree, and comfortable enough for Hunza with a light load. Our guide to family-friendly 7 seater rentals in Lahore compares them in more detail.
For Hunza, Skardu and long multi-valley trips, a full-size SUV is the most requested choice. The Toyota Fortuner (from PKR 18,000/day), Toyota Prado TX (from PKR 20,000/day) and Toyota Landcruiser V8 (from PKR 25,000/day) each seat 7 and are listed with space for 4 large bags. You get high ground clearance for rubble and potholes, strong performance on long climbs and a quieter ride, which matters on a two-day drive. See all SUV cars for rent in Lahore.
Once you pass seven or eight people, splitting into two cars costs more and makes the trip harder to coordinate. The Hiace Grand Cabin (13 seats, from PKR 15,000/day) and Kia Carnival (11 seats, from PKR 20,000/day) are offered with a driver, as are the 4C Saloon Coaster (27 seats, from PKR 20,000/day) and 5C Saloon Coaster (27 seats, from PKR 25,000/day). They are best on paved routes such as Naran, Swat, Murree and the Karakoram Highway. For rough side roads, two SUVs are a better plan than one large van.
Ground clearance: the biggest practical difference in the mountains. It decides how calmly you can cross a broken patch or landslide debris.
Luggage space: warm clothes, snacks and shopping fill a boot quickly. If bags end up on laps, you chose a car that is too small.
Seating comfort: elderly parents and small children feel every hour. Upright seats and legroom matter more than horsepower.
Automatic gearbox: long climbs and stop-start traffic in places like Naran bazaar are easier in an automatic. Most cars in our fleet are automatic; the smallest hatchbacks are manual and we do not recommend them for the north.
A driver who knows the road: on mountain routes, experience behind the wheel counts for more than any vehicle feature.
2 to 3 people, light luggage: Corolla GLI, Yaris or Civic X for paved routes; Sportage or Tucson for extra comfort.
Family of 4 to 6: Honda BRV on a budget, Fortuner or Prado TX for long trips.
7 people: Fortuner, Prado TX or Landcruiser V8.
8 to 13 people: Hiace Grand Cabin or Kia Carnival with driver.
14 or more: a 4C or 5C Saloon Coaster with driver, or a mix of vehicles.
In summer and early autumn, most main northern roads are open and paved, so comfort and space decide your car. In the monsoon, rain can bring landslides and mud, which favours higher ground clearance and a spare day in your plan. In winter, snow and ice make an SUV and an experienced driver the safer choice, and some roads such as Babusar Pass and the upper Kaghan valley close for the season. Always check the latest road status before you leave Lahore.
Some of the best places in the north are reached only by jeep track. At Raikot Bridge on the Karakoram Highway, private cars stop and local jeeps take visitors up to Tato for the walk to Fairy Meadows. Deosai Plateau above Skardu and Mahodand Lake above Kalam are also reached by rough tracks best left to local jeeps and drivers. Our terms and conditions do not allow off-road misuse of our cars, so plan to park in Skardu, Kalam or at Raikot and hire a jeep for the day. Our Fairy Meadows tour and Skardu and Gilgit tour plan these jeep legs for you.
For long mountain trips, most customers rent a car with driver in Lahore. Self drive is available to experienced drivers, with a minimum of 5 days, full payment before handover and a security cheque; overseas clients and foreign nationals deposit their original passport. Before you book, keep these costs in mind:
Driver food and residence: the client provides the driver's meals and accommodation. If you do not provide them, a charge of PKR 2,000 per day applies.
Running allowance: 150 km per day, with outstation charges on non-monthly bookings agreed at booking.
Fuel, tolls and parking: client expenses unless your quote says otherwise.
Driver duty hours: up to 10 hours per day unless agreed otherwise.
Tell us where you are going, your dates, the number of passengers and how much luggage you have, and we will recommend the right car and send a clear quote. Pick your vehicle on the book a car page, call or WhatsApp us on +92 303 0160840, or send your plan through our contact page. SUVs and vans book up fast for summer and Eid holidays, so reserve early.
For most families, a full-size SUV such as the Toyota Fortuner or Prado TX is the best all-round choice for comfort, luggage and ground clearance. On a budget, a Honda BRV or a sedan works on paved routes in good weather.
Yes, in good weather the main roads are paved and a well-maintained sedan can make the trip. It suits couples with light luggage. Families usually find an SUV far more comfortable.
Not for the main paved routes. Jeep-only places such as Fairy Meadows, Deosai and Mahodand Lake are reached by local jeep, whatever car you arrive in.
A Hiace Grand Cabin (13 seats) or Kia Carnival (11 seats) with driver suits most large families. For bigger groups, a Saloon Coaster with 27 seats is available.
The client provides the driver's meals and accommodation. If you prefer not to arrange them, a charge of PKR 2,000 per day applies instead.
